Emma Isaac’s book ‘Winging It’ is fabulous! I absolutely love it. I bought it to listen on Audible during my morning row. I’ve been to a few Business Chicks events of hers, including the one with Kate Hudson in Melbourne, but never reached for Emma’s book until now. It’s so good I’m listening to it for a second time.

What do I love about it?

As a very successful business woman and mother of 5, Emma shares what has worked for her and openly what hasn’t. She inspires you with her stories and challenges you to think about how the game you’re currently playing in your business might be worthy of a bigger court.

I love thinking about business as a game to play. It helps me to stop taking things too seriously (especially when things aren’t going to plan! Like when you hit the goal post instead of kicking the winning goal!) and I stop and think strategically instead.

I draw on my sporting experience and think about all the components in rowing we had to get right to win. We needed the training program, the right equipment, coach, kit, crew members, mindset, teamwork, fitness, diet, technique, determination, dedication, perseverance, a race plan, big goals and drive and ultimately, we needed to believe in ourselves that we could do it.

We had to work on all of these things, and just like the title of Emma’s book, sometimes we just had to ‘wing it’ and hope for the best.

In business there are so many moving parts too. There are your customers, products and services, marketing, employees, team members, social impact, technology, accounts, finance, cashflow, pricing, returns, competitors, even bad weather and the list goes on!

If you’re competitive like I am and love to play to win (I go for PB’s these days) try this out by thinking about your business as though it was your favourite sport.

Decide which court or field you want to play on, make sure you know the rules (of today by the way if you’ve been in business a long time), take your position (which could be a new one depending on your strengths) and give it your best shot! As if the world was watching you play, which quite frankly, it pretty much already is, but that’s a story for another day.

All across the world, women enjoy longer life spans and live on average 5% longer than men.

According to the world health statistics – The gap between male and female life expectancy is greater in high-income countries, such as Australia, where women live around six years longer than men.

So what does this remarkably consistent survival advantage of women mean for women and their finances?

It means that chances are, they will be left alone to manage their finances without the support of their husbands in the final years of their lives.

This can be a very scary situation especially since, among married women, only 11% of Boomers are reported as the primary financial decision makers throughout their married life, compared to 22% of Gen X and 38% of married Millennial women.

Suzanne Alexander Adv Dip(FP), a Financial Adviser at Melbourne’s Abound Financial and Lifestyle Planning who specialises in helping women with their finances, has discovered that after suffering the loss of their husband, many women are left feeling overwhelmed at the enormity of their financial situation, which now resides solely in their responsibility.

Alexander says many newly found widows quickly discover that they have multiple accounts and investments and are not sure what to do or where to begin. “They can be left feeling confused as to what account relates to which investment and in addition, they may not be aware of what investments are actually in place,” she says.

Left feeling confused, lacking in confidence and vulnerable and not wanting to be taken advantage of, studies show that women are now seeking out female financial advisers that they feel they can trust.

Alexander says older women can face losing their partners age pension (if applicable) and not knowing how they can create an income stream from current investments.

Here are key areas that Suzanne Alexander helps older women with who have recently found themselves on their own.

• To assist in creating a level of control over their finances
• Understanding their expenses by undertaking a budget
• Establishing a structure to their finances so they know where everything is and it is designed appropriately for their specific situation
• Security in knowing that their finances are being professionally managed
• Continuation of income and sense of comfort in knowing that they will be ok financially (where projections are provided).

Suzanne also provides a personalised and on-going support program ‘Financial Fitness for Women’ ~ Advice for women wanting to gain financial independence and control of their lives, which consists of:

Suzanne reported, “We have clients who have stated that they couldn’t have done it without our help (manage their finances).  In particular, one client post the loss of her husband, had ‘friends’ coming to her to invest money which she was willing to do, without taking into consideration her own needs.  As a result of acting as a sounding board this didn’t go ahead, as it didn’t allow for her own financial needs to be met and at her age would have put her in a high risk position, as the business was a start-up and small businesses have such a high failure rate in Australia.”

HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU’VE REALLY HAD ENOUGH

Perhaps you have been playing a sport for many years and seem to have lost the fun or drive you once had for it.

Or you think you’ve had enough of your current job, career or business but are not 100% sure you’re ready to let it go.

Maybe you’re thinking this same thing about your relationship…

Now there are definitely times in our lives when we have really had enough and it’s time to ‘hang up the boots’ but if we once had such love, drive and fun doing something and it’s suddenly or even slowly diminished chances are there’s simply something missing.

Here are 2 key factors for you to consider:

1. You’re no longer growing, either you’ve achieved everything you want to in a sport or your business, or you just don’t have any new and inspiring goals to strive for. Perhaps your relationship is stagnant because you’re not moving forward together towards something important or meaningful.

2. It’s time to get some outside help either from an expert or coach to help you re-ignite the love, energy and drive you once had.

What I experienced while skiing at Falls Creek Victoria, Australia was the feeling that I’d had enough. I have always had a great love for skiing and my first day back on this trip was after a long break so I spent it ‘finding my feet’. The following day I ventured onto a more difficult run and again I did this on the third day.

But after that I’d had enough and I felt like I could really just hang up my boots. I knew there was more to it and luckily enough my fellow skiing buddies convinced me I should have a lesson.

Now at first I was reluctant, as all the ski instructors I’d had in Australia, New Zealand and Europe simply took me way out of my comfort zone and skiing down double black runs and off the edges of scary mountain cliffs. At this stage in my life I really didn’t want to risk get injured or do it simply to say I’ve conquered the mountain.

However I decided to go along and ended up having an entirely different experience. This skiing instructor took us on a green beginner slope AND TAUGHT US expert technique. How to roll my ankles and knees properly, and how to more effectively distribute my weight.

After this one little lesson I was on fire! I skied all day long and you couldn’t get me off the slopes I was having THE BEST time!

WHY?

Because I was growing, I had something to work on to improve myself. If we’re not growing, learning or helping others, days can quickly and easily become mundane and boring (even at a luxurious ski resort!) and we can feel like quitting.

1. APPRECIATE YOUR JOB – even if you don’t love it!

How would you feel tomorrow if it was no longer there for you? How would it impact your life? How would in affect your family? We just never know what will happen tomorrow. But, what we do know is if you don’t appreciate what you already have, the universe doesn’t help you by giving you something better… it usually takes what you currently have away!

2. LISTEN TO FEEDBACK.

What is your boss or coach saying to you? Are there areas of improvement? This is your ideal chance to work on and improve yourself in regards to your skills and expertise right now where you are. This will also help you enjoy going to work a little bit more tomorrow when you have something specific to challenge yourself with.

3. DO YOUR BEST.

Even if you’re currently in a job that you don’t really love – do your best! This will not only make you feel good about yourself but you also won’t be left with regrets if your job wasn’t there tomorrow.

AND HERE IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST CAREER TIPS EVER!!!

You just never know who is watching you. Perhaps another senior manager, client or colleague could see how you work and offer you an amazing opportunity. If you’re at work showing up any less than your best self… do you think they will want it give it to you? No! So get to work and be your best self, you just never know where or from who your next best career opportunity will come from.
