New Year – New Job!

A new year can feel like you have a fresh start, a new found inspiration and it can be a great time to set yourself new goals for the year ahead.

Grab yourself a pen and paper, find a quiet and inspiring place and answer the following questions:

1. What do you love doing so much that if you didn’t need any money you’d do it for free?
2. What skills do you have that gain me the most appreciation and biggest thankyou’s for from others?
3. What type of people do you want to work with and for?
4. What kind of working hours suit you that fit around your personal life so you don’t have to try and fit your personal life around your work?
5. Do you have a role title that you have your heart set on? If so, what is it?
6. What industry would you like to work in or know which one you don’t?
7. What annual salary would you like to receive?
8. What do you need to do to get yourself into this new position?
9. Whose help do you need to make the change this year?
10. What’s holding you back? Do you have a little voice in your head coming up with reasons why you can’t? Is it time to challenge those thoughts?

Emma Isaac’s Book – Winging It!

Emma Isaac’s book ‘Winging It’ is fabulous! I absolutely love it. I bought it to listen on Audible during my morning row. I’ve been to a few Business Chicks events of hers, including the one with Kate Hudson in Melbourne, but never reached for Emma’s book until now. It’s so good I’m listening to it for a second time.

What do I love about it?

As a very successful business woman and mother of 5, Emma shares what has worked for her and openly what hasn’t. She inspires you with her stories and challenges you to think about how the game you’re currently playing in your business might be worthy of a bigger court.

I love thinking about business as a game to play. It helps me to stop taking things too seriously (especially when things aren’t going to plan! Like when you hit the goal post instead of kicking the winning goal!) and I stop and think strategically instead.

I draw on my sporting experience and think about all the components in rowing we had to get right to win. We needed the training program, the right equipment, coach, kit, crew members, mindset, teamwork, fitness, diet, technique, determination, dedication, perseverance, a race plan, big goals and drive and ultimately, we needed to believe in ourselves that we could do it.

We had to work on all of these things, and just like the title of Emma’s book, sometimes we just had to ‘wing it’ and hope for the best.

In business there are so many moving parts too. There are your customers, products and services, marketing, employees, team members, social impact, technology, accounts, finance, cashflow, pricing, returns, competitors, even bad weather and the list goes on!

If you’re competitive like I am and love to play to win (I go for PB’s these days) try this out by thinking about your business as though it was your favourite sport.

Decide which court or field you want to play on, make sure you know the rules (of today by the way if you’ve been in business a long time), take your position (which could be a new one depending on your strengths) and give it your best shot! As if the world was watching you play, which quite frankly, it pretty much already is, but that’s a story for another day.

Do you disagree with the way your boss does things?

Just because your boss does something one way doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

If it does not align with your values then don’t compromise.

Find a way that keeps you on path and aligned to your beliefs and goals.

For example your boss promises a client he/she will deliver on the day they want. Your boss keeps them happy in that moment by saying yes. But then he/she never delivers on the promised date and makes up some excuse as to why it’s not his/her fault.

Or worse your boss promises to the client and expects you to drop everything to deliver and puts you under huge pressure! (if this happens to you, feel free to give me a call to discuss how to speak to your boss to prevent this happening again!)

When you are in the position of agreeing a delivery date, if you know you will not be able to deliver on their requested date tell them at the time.

The question is would you rather be known for delivering when you say you will or never following through on your promises.

So often the client will be fine with your delivery date, perhaps it’s not their ideal date but if they can rely and trust you will deliver when you say you will they will be happy.

How to blitz your performance review

Blitzing your performance review starts way before your actual review meeting.

It starts when the objectives on your performance review are being set.

Some people find themselves working under management who don’t even do regular performance reviews. If this is you ask for it.

However if you do have performance reviews it’s essential you know what you are expected to achieve before you set out trying to achieve it.

Ensure each objective has a measure, don’t sign off on them if the result is going to be subjective to the opinion of someone else.

This way there is no disputing if you have achieved the objective or not.

You will also want the objective measures to be broken down into not met, met and exceeded. Or whichever rating scale you use i.e. 1 to 5. What does each mean exactly?

If you don’t have clear objectives implemented as part of your quarterly and annual performance reviews get in touch with us. We can help your company role them out so all employees are clear on what they do, how they impact the business and that each and every objective ties straight into the vision and goals of the organisation.

Review your objectives regularly to keep on track, better yet spend the start of each quarter on completing them so you don’t leave them to the last minute and risk not achieving them.

If you don’t have clear objectives or regular performance reviews how do you know how well you’re actually doing? No knowing can cause stress and anxiety. Don’t let this be you.

How to know what really drives you at work

If you’re feeling flat or just want to take your work to the next level then you will want to know what drives you.

What makes you jump out of bed in the morning excited to go to work?

If you haven’t had one of these days for a long time think back to one time that you did.

What was special about that day? What were you doing? What were you working on? Why were you so excited?

I have worked with many people to help them find what their drive is and here are a few tips I would like to share with you.

It’s not so much about what you do but why you’re doing it. If you know its meaning then you know there is purpose to what you’re doing.
Drive can come from the connection with others. How is your work or project helping or inspiring others?
Inspiration can come from making one of your ideas come into reality
The goal needs to be big enough, you need a sense of confidence but it’s going to be a really big stretch. Anything that is too small for ‘you’ won’t be very exciting.

Once you find what drives you simply make sure it happens at work for you as much as possible.

Remember if creating new ideas is what excites you most but you dislike the follow through. This is not a negative, it just means you need a great team around you to finish your newly implemented ideas.

Would you like to love Mondays in 2017?

I thought this picture was super cute because one, yes I do LOVE cats but two, I love helping people love their Monday mornings!

Why?

Because there was a time in my life where I dreaded going to work on a Monday morning, so much so, that it completely ruined my Sundays…

I believe we all have a purpose in life and when we love what we do, when we’re utilising our greatest strengths, talents and passions, not only does work not feel like work, it’s our greatest potential to deliver outstanding value in the world and therefore become highly successful doing it.

So now that 2016 is coming to an end, it’s the perfect time to reflect back upon your year with your friends and family and/or coach.

An exercise I always take my clients through is to highlight 3 things that have happened in your life in 2016 that you are most happy about, proud of or thankful for.

Reflect upon 2016

For me one of the things I’m most grateful for is working with Jo Formosa from Back to Health and the co-creator of Health Dynamics, who has helped me enormously in my life this year. She has been an amazing support and through her process I have learned even more about neuro strategies and breaking through limiting patterns from your past.

Secondly, I’m most grateful for the extensive travel I have been blessed to have experienced again this year, where I’m heading into my 7th summer in a row!

In 2016 I spent time visiting clients, friends and family in Australia, Switzerland, UK, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Serbia and Indonesia!

Thirdly, I’m most thankful for each and everyone of, what I call my ‘kindred spirits’ i.e. all the people whom I have spent time with and crossed paths with this year, where I’ve not only had a great time with but who have taught me many things along the way.

I would love to hear your greatest achievements and things you’re most thankful for in 2016 too!

Once you’ve reflected on 2016 then it’s time to make a time to plan 2017.

Plan for your goals and dreams to come true in 2017

For me, I always start with buying an annual wall calendar and I populate it with all the most important things, people and events in my life and then schedule my work around that.

Make a time to plan out your goals and the positive changes you would like to make in your life in 2017.

Get the help and support you need to make sure 2017 is your best year yet!
